The state, which is part of the Saar-Lor-Lux European region, is rich in cultural treasures with a history dating back more than 2,000 years. Traces of the Romans can be found in Trier (founded in 16 BC) with its spectecular Portanigra and amphitheater, castle fans get their money's worth in the Palatinate Forest (the largest forest area in Germany) and on the Rhine and Moselle, and also Karl Marx was born here.

"Born" several times a day, the huge fountain of the geyser in Andernach is the highest cold-water geyser in the world. But it gets even better: If you go swimming in Lake Laach, you will swim in the crater lake of a dormant volcano whose activity is observed by scientists from all over the world. Pure thrill!

Not far from the lake, your hypothalamus will be stimulated in a completely different way: The Nürburgring, a world-famous racetrack, regularly hosts Formula 1 races, along with other racing events. And if German drivers are particularly successful, chances are good that they will be found as figures on a float in the big carnival parades. After all, that's Rhineland-Palatinate, too: a carnival stronghold with Mainz at its center, where Germany's third-largest Shrove Monday parade takes place at non-Corona times
